Summer 2015-Community Involvement Through Youth Service:

Plans are in the works for a 4 day service week, Monday 6/15-Thurs 6/18.  The goal is to experience our diverse community through service; fostering friendships as we work alongside residents, and creating opportunities for continued collaboration…with FUN at the same time!  We’ll meet at Advent at 9am each morning for preparation, and then head out in carpools to our project site for the day. Lunch will be a TBD combo of picnic or inexpensive local flavor restaurants. We’ll return to Advent for our daily de-brief and reflection, wrapping up at 3 pm.  Cost of $40 per participant provides for meals, snacks, water and transportation (financial assistance available). Adult chaperones are needed based on the number of participants. Our projects qualify for community service hours. You may include 1 friend (same friend each day). This will be an amazing week of sharing time, talent, friendship & kindness!

– Monday 6/15 Advent Senior assistance:  Offer household help to  elderly Advent  members including yard work/gardening, moving furniture & minor repairs with the commitment to assist in future maintenance as the need arises.  Elderly can often feel isolated; our members should feel that they are a valued part of a community that they can depend upon.

-Tuesday 6/16 Walnut Way/Lindsay Heights: Walnut Way sponsors community activities ranging from educational opportunities to rain gardens managing storm water. Although remarkable progress has been made for revitalization of this area, many residents still live in poverty.  Founder Sharon Adams is a friend of Advent and has spoken at our services, sharing her inspirational story.  We will be helping in the urban gardens.

-Wednesday 6/17 Cross Church Milwaukee:  Bread of Healing Ministry provides free health care, employment counseling, and hot lunch meals to those who live in poverty or are homeless.  We will be preparing and serving lunch to 200 guests in need, and helping out in any other areas needed such as the food pantry.

-Thursday 6/18 Next Door Foundation-“Read With Me”:  Child focused education programs for at risk families.  Goals are to improve school readiness, develop parent leadership and economic self-sufficiency.  We will deliver the books that are currently being collected, and then spend the day reading to preschoolers and/or assisting teachers in classrooms.                      **We will tentatively plan to return on Thursday at 4:30 pm after some picnic fun at a local beach or park to celebrate the week.**

Commitment:  Being that our service week is local, there may be the inclination to attend some days and not others based on schedules and interests; however, anyone interested in participating is strongly encouraged to commit to the entire week.  It’s important to keep in mind that missions involve sacrifice, and that might mean giving up another activity OR, openness to an opportunity that might not otherwise interest you.  We wouldn’t discourage anyone due to pre-arranged commitments that can’t be rescheduled- but, to get the most out of the experience of truly serving others, and to be part of a team, every effort should be made to devote the entire 4 days.
